Rio Hondo College managed just three hits in 5-0 loss at Pasadena City College on Thursday in the second of a three-game South Coast Conference North Division series. The Roadrunners will look to avoid the sweep on Saturday (Mar. 30) when the set concludes back in Whittier at 12 p.m.
The No. 16 state-ranked Lancers (17-7, 9-4 SCC) put the game out of reach early, rallying for two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second off Rio Hondo starting pitcher Abraham Carrillo. From the other side of the diamond, three Pasadena pitchers (Austin Ruiz, Benny Torres, and Benny Olguin) combined for the three-hit shutout.
Jordan Salgado hit a lead-off double for the Roadrunners in the seventh but was stranded on base. Alex Banda and Jesus Maldonado hit singles for Rio Hondo's other two hits.
Carrillo took the loss after allowing three earned runs and seven hits over three innings. The Rio Hondo bullpen did well to keep them in game as Isaiah Vasquez, James Wright, Robert Valdez, and Josh Yorba held Pasadena scoreless for the final five innings of the contest.
The Roadrunners have lost five straight and fell to 8-16 overall and are 4-9 in South Coast Conference play.
