Rio Hondo College sophomore Aaron Patterson posted a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds, but a late Roadrunner comeback came up just short in an 84-81 loss to Glendale Community College on Sunday.
The defeat wrapped up a tough weekend for Rio Hondo as the Roadrunners went 0-3 at Antelope Valley College's Gregg Anderson Memorial Tournament.
Rio Hondo was down 45-41 at halftime and trailed Glendale for a majority of the second half on Sunday. With 11 seconds left to play, Patterson nailed a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three points. The Roadrunners had one last chance to tie up the contest, but a three-point shot by John Mims at the buzzer didn't go in and Glendale escaped with the victory.
Mims added 16 points, 5 steals, and 3 assists while Lamin Williams, Bryant Howing, and Noah Randall all scored 9 points each.
Rio Hondo opened the tournament on Friday with an 84-73 loss to host Antelope Valley. The Roadrunners sank 10 three-pointers in the contest, but AVC shot 50 percent (32 of 64) from the field which proved to be the difference.
Kameron Hobbs came off the bench to lead Rio Hondo with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Mims added 12 points and 6 assists while Howing totaled 11 points and 4 rebounds.
The Roadrunners' streaky shooting continued in their 75-60 loss to MiraCosta College on Saturday. Rio Hondo made 23 of 59 shots, including just 4 of 16 from three-point range.
Mims once again led Rio Hondo, scoring 18 points. Patterson had a good all-around game, posting 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Randall grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds to go along with 6 points.
The Roadrunners fell to 3-8 overall after the weekend's action. Rio Hondo returns to the court on Wednesday (Dec. 11) to face Glendale once again, this time on the Vaqueros' home court. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
