The 2017 season came to a close for the Rio Hondo College women's soccer team after a narrow 1-0 loss to visiting No. 6-seed Santiago Canyon College on Tuesday night in a second-round game of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
A goal by Santiago Canyon's April Gonzalez moments after the second-half opening whistle (46:06) proved to be the game-winner.
Rio Hondo, seeded third for the postseason, closed the year with a 15-4-2 overall record. Despite the abrupt end to the season, it was another impressive effort for head coach Jennifer Tanaka-Hoshijo and her Roadrunners.
Rio Hondo went a perfect 8-0 in North Division play to capture its second consecutive South Coast Conference title. The conference championship was the fourth straight for the Roadrunners after winning their first-ever SCC North title last year as well as consecutive Foothill Conference championships in 2014 and 2015.
