Rio Hondo College survived a back-and-forth slugfest to defeat Ventura College 14–12 on Tuesday, as both teams piled up 16 hits in a game that featured big swings, timely RBI, and constant momentum shifts.
Ventura struck early behind a relentless middle of the order. Aiden Nykoluk led the charge with a huge day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, including a double and a triple. Hector Pina delivered the biggest blow for the Pirates, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, and four RBI. Matthew Ramirez also had a standout performance, collecting three hits and driving in three runs, while Brandon Contreras chipped in three hits and an RBI.
The Pirates scored seven runs in the first three innings, tagging Rio Hondo starter Marcus Mayweather for seven runs (four earned) on nine hits. Despite the early deficit, the Roadrunners never folded.
Rio Hondo answered with steady pressure throughout the lineup, drawing eight walks and capitalizing on Ventura miscues. Elias Mota was a spark plug, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, a sacrifice fly, and a stolen base. Diego Helguera delivered a clutch performance, driving in three runs and stealing a base, while Andy Becerra added two hits and two RBI.
Danyal Jenkins continued the rally with a double and two RBI, and Andrew Ruvalcaba added a pair of hits and an RBI. Joshua Oh set the table all night, scoring twice from the leadoff spot, while Nicholas Gonzales crossed the plate three times.
The turning point came in the middle innings as Ventura's bullpen struggled with control. Rio Hondo scored eight runs over the final five innings, taking advantage of walks, hit batters, and defensive errors to swing the game in its favor.
Christian Ortega earned the win for Rio Hondo, tossing two solid innings with four strikeouts while allowing a solo home run. Gabriel Lizarraga closed the door with two steady innings to secure the victory. Ventura reliever Jacob Cunningham was tagged with the loss.
In a game defined by offense, patience, and persistence, Rio Hondo's depth and timely hitting proved just enough to outlast Ventura in a 14–12 thriller.
