Women’s Basketball: Roadrunners get No. 8 seed for playoffs, host No. 9 Cypress

The Rio Hondo College women's basketball team has been awarded the No. 8 seed for the upcoming 2020 Southern California Regional Playoffs and will host No. 9 Cypress College in a second-round game on Friday (Feb. 28) at 7 p.m.

Tickets to the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) postseason event at the Rio Hondo College Gymnasium are $12 for general admission and $8 for all identified students, faculty, staff, senior citizens age 60 and over, and children less than 12 years of age.

The Roadrunners recently wrapped up the regular season with a 75-65 win over East Los Angeles College on Friday to close with a 20-8 overall record. Rio Hondo went 5-3 in South Coast Conference North Division play to finish in second place. The Roadrunners played one of the toughest schedules in the state as evident in their No. 7 final RPI rating among Southern California teams.

Rio Hondo will be making its second straight postseason appearance under third-year head coach Rene Herrera. Last year, the No. 12-seeded Roadrunners suffered a 60-49 second-round playoff loss at No. 5 Ventura College.

Cypress enters Friday's game with a 20-6 overall record. The Chargers went 9-3 in the Orange Empire Conference to earn a second-place finish. Cypress will be making its 12th consecutive postseason appearance under long-time head coach Margaret Mohr.

Friday's contest will mark the first meeting between the two squads this season. Barring a major upset, the winner will likely face No. 1 Moorpark College in a third-round game on March 7. Two wins are needed to advance to the CCCAA State Championships on March 12-15 at West Hills College Lemoore.
