WALNUT – Freshman Miranda Mireles scored a team-high 24 points to help lead the Rio Hondo College women's basketball team to its first win of the season, a 62-44 triumph over Los Angeles Trade-Tech College on Saturday at Day 2 of the Mt. San Antonio College Tip-Off Tournament.
The Roadrunners went 1-2 at the season-opening tournament that showcased some of the top teams in the state. Rio Hondo opened the 2023-24 season on Friday and suffered a tough 75-45 loss to No. 6 state-ranked Moorpark College. After bouncing back with Saturday's victory, the Roadrunners closed out the three-day event with a 65-37 loss to the Hope International University JV squad in the consolation bracket final.
Against LA Trade-Tech, the Roadrunners got off to a quick 5-0 advantage and would hold that lead throughout the entirety of the game.
Morales nailed 5 three-pointers on her way to 24 points. She also grabbed 6 rebounds and added 3 assists. Hesma Valdes was solid off the bench against Trade-Tech as she posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in just 18 minutes on the court.
Emily Liu had a good all-around game with 9 points, 8 boards, 5 blocks, and 3 steals.
Rio Hondo returns to the court on Thursday (Nov. 9) at 3 p.m. when the Roadrunners open play against San Jose City College at the three-day Riverside City College "Earning Our Stripes" Tournament.
