Roadrunners open conference play with win over LA Trade-Tech
By Sergio Ramos
Rio Hondo College edged LA Trade-Tech in a gritty, defensive battle on Wednesday, pulling out a 48–44 victory in a game defined by rebounding, hustle plays, and timely free throws rather than shooting efficiency.
Both teams struggled offensively, combining to shoot under 30 percent from the field, but Rio Hondo found just enough scoring late to secure the win.
Miranda Morales led all scorers for Rio Hondo with 23 points, knocking down 4 three-pointers and going a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. She also added 10 rebounds, recording a double-double and delivering key baskets down the stretch. Adreinne Bausley chipped in 11 points along with strong perimeter defense, while Rio Hondo's frontcourt helped control the glass with 45 total rebounds.
LA Trade-Tech was paced by Niela Williams, who finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds, anchoring the paint on both ends. Jada Kindle provided a spark off the bench with 12 points and 7 rebounds, and Athieng Bol added 9 points, shooting efficiently from the floor.
Defense dominated the night. Trade-Tech forced 29 turnovers and recorded 9 blocks, including a standout performance from Erin Jackson, who finished with 14 rebounds, 4 steals, and 6 blocks. However, Trade-Tech struggled to convert those extra possessions, shooting just 28.1% from the field and 19.2% from three-point range.
Rio Hondo wasn't much sharper offensively, but their edge at the free-throw line (13-of-21) and late-game composure made the difference. Despite shooting 23.1% overall, the Roadrunners capitalized on key opportunities in the fourth quarter to hold off Trade-Tech's comeback attempts.
In the end, Rio Hondo's rebounding, clutch free throws, and Morales' scoring touch proved enough to secure a hard-fought 48–44 win over LA Trade-Tech.
