By Sergio Ramos
In a high-energy playoff matchup, Chaffey College pulled away in overtime to defeat Rio Hondo College 80–73 in the opening round of the Southern California regional women's basketball playoffs.
Chaffey used balanced scoring and a strong performance at the free-throw line to secure the victory, converting 22 of 33 attempts and placing five players in double figures or near double digits.
Forward Abby Hardy led the Panthers with 17 points and 13 rebounds in a game-high 44 minutes, controlling the glass and providing key second-chance opportunities. Guard Kamryn Ellis added 13 points off the bench while contributing four steals, and Danielle Singley chipped in 12 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Niyah Thomas orchestrated the offense with six assists and 10 points, while Alexa Castricone knocked down three three-pointers for nine points.
Rio Hondo battled throughout the contest and dominated the rebounding margin, finishing with 56 boards compared to Chaffey's 50. Kathleen Rachmat sparked the Roadrunners off the bench with a team-high 18 points and five steals. Audrey Campos delivered a strong defensive presence with 14 points and five blocks, while Adrienne Bausley added 12 points despite heavy defensive pressure. Toni Vizcaino anchored the interior with 13 rebounds.
The Roadrunners generated plenty of opportunities, attempting 85 field goals and pulling down 26 offensive rebounds, but struggled with efficiency, shooting 35.3 percent from the field and just 2-for-17 from beyond the arc. Chaffey capitalized on Rio Hondo turnovers and used its free-throw advantage to maintain control in the closing minutes.
Despite the loss, Rio Hondo showed resilience with contributions throughout the lineup and strong rebounding efforts that kept the game competitive into the final stretch.
Chaffey advances to the next round of the Southern California regional playoffs after the 80–73 victory.
