Roadrunners suffer dual loss in conference opener at Cerritos
NORWALK – The Rio Hondo College wrestling team began its Southwest Conference schedule with a 35-15 loss at nearby Cerritos College on Wednesday night.
The Roadrunners put themselves in an early hole after having to forfeit matches at the 184 and 197-pound weight divisions. Rio Hondo went on to win three of the eight matches that were contested.
Rio Hondo's Mason Barros-Santiago got the dual started with a pin of Cerritos' Jesse Hernadez at the six-minute mark of the 125-pound match. Larry Cruz was also a winner by fall at 157, beating the Falcons' Marcel Blake at 6:07.
Picking up the Roadrunners' final win was Turner Yanagisawa at 165. He defeated Chris Mattar by a narrow 7-6 decision.
With the loss, Rio Hondo fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in Southwest Conference action. The Roadrunners return to the mat on Nov. 15 when they host Imperial Valley College in a 7 p.m. dual.
