Roadrunners close season with 14th-place finish at State Championships
ROCKLIN – Thanks to three top-seven individual showings, Rio Hondo College totaled 36 points to finish in 14th place out of 22 teams at the 2025 3C2A State Championships. The two-event hosted by Sierra College wrapped up on Saturday.
Larry Cruz (157-pounds) and Turner Yanagisawa (165) both came home with sixth-place finishes while Edmon Altunyan (133) was seventh.
Cruz won two matches at the state tournament but ultimately fell by a narrow 6-5 margin to Fresno City College's R Gutierrez in the fifth-place match.
Yanagisawa won his opening match as well and battled his way to the fifth-place match before losing 4-1 to G Ruiz of Bakersfield College in the fifth-place final.
Altunyan lost his first match, but made his way through the consolation bracket with a pair of wins before coming out on top in the seventh-place match.
An impressive run for the Rio Hondo wrestling program continues. Head coach Mike Tellez has now led the Roadrunners to 11 straight top-15 team finishes at the state tournament.
