Roadrunners open season vs. Antelope Valley
WHITTIER – The 2026 Rio Hondo College women's tennis season got off to a tough start as the Roadrunners dropped their opening-day match by a final score of 7-2 against visiting Antelope Valley College on Friday.
Returning sophomores Makayla Glover and Sophia Chavez led the Roadrunners on the day, picking up the squad's wins. Glover and Chavez teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat the Antelope Valley team of Luna Mendez and Ariana Valiente by a score of 8-4.
And Chavez took the win at No. 2 singles, defeating Valiente 6-1, 6-2.
Rio Hondo battled in doubles action but came up just short. The No. 2 duo of Bethany Rojas and Princess Arevalo suffered a 7-9 loss. No. 3 doubles was even closer with Jenavie Corral and Desiree Hernandez getting edged 8-9.
Rio Hondo is back in action on Thursday (Jan. 29) in search of its first win when the Roadrunners host Southwestern College in a 2 p.m. non-conference match.
