Rio Hondo women’s tennis earns ITA All-Academic Team, Scholar Athlete awards

Following an outstanding season on the court, the Rio Hondo College women's tennis team was recognized for its impressive efforts in the classroom.

On Friday, the Roadrunners were one of six California Community colleges named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Junior College All-Academic Team. Just 12 two-year colleges from throughout the nation earned the honor.

To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),
  • All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and
  • All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year

Also, Rio Hondo had three individuals named ITA Junior College Scholar Athletes. The three named Scholar Athletes were freshman Jenavie Corral, sophomore Makayla Glover, and freshman Bethany Rosas.

To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year
  • Be listed on the institutional eligibility form

Rio Hondo women's tennis head coach Karen Unger was extremely pleased with her team's efforts off the court.

"These prestigious national academic awards are such an honor for both the three individuals from Rio Hondo College women's tennis who qualified as well as the entire team," said Unger. "It represents how hard they worked both on the court and in the classroom.

"In addition, I am extremely proud to be the coach of one of only 12 teams in the nation to win the All-Academic Team award."

The ITA is the governing body of college tennis, overseeing men's and women's varsity tennis at all levels – NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College. The ITA states academia is an integral aspect of the college tennis experience and adds to the unique student-athlete experience found on college campuses across the nation.
