Roadrunners cruise to 20-6 rout over Pasadena City
WHITTIER – Freshman Reagan Martinez exploded for a season-high six goals while freshman Elyssa Velasquez also scored a season-best five goals to help lead Rio Hondo College to its first win, a 20-6 South Coast Conference victory over visiting Pasadena City College on Wednesday.
The game was close as the Roadrunners held a narrow one-goal advantage (4-3) after the opening quarter. But Rio Hondo outscored PCC 5-0 in the second quarter and 11-3 over the second half to roll to the big victory.
Martinez added a pair of assists and a steal while Velasquez also had two assists and two steals. Klariza Munoz had a solid game with four goals, three assists, and a steal.
Emily Narvaez scored twice and the Roadrunners got single goals from Briana Vasquez-Barba, Nicki Carrillo, and Estrella Guerrero.
Mia Gonzalez put together her best game in goal for the Roadrunners, posting eight saves.
Rio Hondo is now 1-13 overall and 1-5 in the SCC. The Roadrunners will look to carry the momentum into the weekend (Oct. 24-25) when they will compete at the Battle at the Beach tournament. Rio Hondo is set to play four games at Cypress College starting on Friday with a 10:45 a.m. contest against Chaffey College.
Rio Hondo will also face Merced College on Friday to close out the day at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Roadrunners are scheduled to play Southwestern College at 9:30 a.m. and host Cypress at noon.
